It can. Boosting also raises the noise floor, and anything above maximum level gets clipped and crackles — the tool warns you when that happens. Prefer peak normalization, which stops at a safe level automatically.
Gain runs from 0.1× to 4× (roughly 10%–400%); turning it down approaches silence. For noisy material, run Denoise Audio first, then boost.
